How to Get a Warranty for a Used Car, in Red Deer

Did you know that used cars can come with warranties? Most people think that only new cars can offer warranty benefits. However, thanks to dealerships and vehicle manufacturers, most used cars can come with their own warranty to help keep buyers safe and free from the hassle of having to pay for some vehicle maintenance or malfunctions.

Our customers ask us about our used car warranties every day. Here are some of the most commonly asked questions and answers:

Can a used car be a lemon?

No. A “lemon” is the term for a car that has a fundamental manufacturing flaw. If a vehicle owner has to take the vehicle back to the shop for repair on the same issue a certain number of times in a certain time period, then the vehicle can be declared a lemon and the owner can get a replacement for free. However, because a used car has been pre-owned, the dealer or manufacturer cannot be sure that a troublesome issue was caused by a fundamental flaw in the vehicle and not the previous owner. Therefore, a used car cannot be declared a lemon. It may, however, be protected by the terms of the warranty.

Will the warranty cover damage to the windshield?

It depends. Some used car warranties are comprehensive and cover bumper-to-bumper issues, including damage to the windshield and, sometimes, tire wear and tear. However, other warranties offer fewer protection points. Speak with your dealer about warranty options for used cars, including what elements may be covered under which warranty plan levels.

How long will the warranty last?

The duration of the warranty is often based on a matter of months or miles put on the vehicle. There are usually several different warranty duration periods. Longer periods are usually more expensive. Speak with your dealer about duration periods in order to determine which warranty options are best for your needs.

Do all used cars have warranties?

No. In order to get a used car warranty, you need to buy your used car from a dealer that offers used car warranties. Many dealers will offer certified used car warranties, which means that the manufacturer itself puts the warranty on the car after the dealer has performed an exhaustive inspection of the vehicle. In some cases, buyers can obtain a certified used car warranty along with a dealer used car warranty. Note: Not all dealers or used car sellers offer warranties.
